Position Statements

ADPSN supports the Tri-Council for Nursing’s Consensus Position on the Educational Advancement of Registered Nurses. The Tri-Council for Nursing is made up of the American Nurses Association (ANA), National League for Nursing (NLN) American Organization of Nurse Executives (A)NE) and American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

The focus of their policy statements is on the “educational advancement of the current and future nursing workforce to address the need for improved patient quality and safety.” ADSPN agrees and has always been resolute in the need for life long learning. No matter what entry point nurses come into the profession, the need for continued education, both formal and informal, is a requirement of the profession. As healthcare becomes more complex and the needs of patients more diverse, no nurse can ever say that her education is completed. We all must continually strive to become more educated.

ADSPN also supports the Tri-Council’s call to action to support system changes in nursing practice and education. Education must promote more streamlined models of progression through the education system with articulation agreements and employers must support nurses returning to school. We also believe that State and Federal policy initiatives need to promote academic progression. The need for grants, scholarships, stipends and loan repayment opportunities is more evident now than it has ever has been. Finally, we support the Tri-Council’s statement that nurses must recognize their individual responsibility to further their education. Nursing is a demanding field that requires life long learning.
